A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam. Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. On June 24, 1939 the Government of Siam changes its name to Thailand, which means "Free Land". Since 1996 Thailand has had a positive balance of trade with both China & the US.
